How to act when a baby has a fever?

Fever is a common condition in children, especially with the start of daycare or school, and it intensifies during autumn and winter due to the increase in infections that are easily transmitted. Fever indicates that the body is defending itself, as it is a mechanism by which the body fights infections. Therefore, fever itself is not a disease, but a symptom that the body is fighting against another underlying disease.

Why does fever increase?

The increase in body temperature favors the activity of the immune system. In other words, an elevated temperature helps our defenses be more effective against the viruses and bacteria that cause infections. Therefore, in certain situations, it is advisable not to focus solely on reducing the fever to normal levels, but on relieving the associated discomfort (such as fatigue, heaviness, drowsiness, and weakness).

Before treating fever lightly and trying to reduce it, it is essential to identify its underlying cause. It is important to observe other symptoms and consult with pediatricians or medical specialists, especially in the case of the youngest. Self-medication is not recommended. Tools like dose calculators can help determine the appropriate amount of paracetamol for your child, but they should be used only as guidance.

children vaccines

Antipyretics usually reduce body temperature by 1 to 1.5 ºC. Paracetamol should not be administered to babies under 3 months without medical supervision, nor ibuprofen to those under 6 months. Additionally, it is not advisable to use paracetamol as a preventive measure against vaccine reactions.

A common question is whether it is possible to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen, that is, administer one every four hours: paracetamol first, then ibuprofen after 4 hours, and so on. However, there is no evidence that this alternation is more effective and it could increase the risk of side effects. Therefore, it is not recommended to alternate these medications, although it is often done.

If you are here because your child has a fever, consult with the pediatrician to know which medication to administer. You can use the Apiretal 100 mg/ml calculator to determine the appropriate dose of paracetamol.

How to calculate the Apiretal dose?

How much Apiretal does a 21 kg child need?

How to calculate the paracetamol dose for a child?

ℹ Apiretal, a paracetamol syrup, has a concentration of 100 mg/ml. The appropriate amount of paracetamol for a child depends on their weight.

The basic formula is:

Multiply the child’s weight by 0.15 to get the ml you need to administer.

For example, for a 10 kg child, the recommended dose is 1.5 ml of paracetamol every 6-8 hours.

Alternative formula to calculate the Apiretal dose

There is another less common formula to calculate the Apiretal dose:

(Weight in kg + 1/2 of the weight in kg) / 10 = Apiretal dose in ml.

For example:

  • For a 10 kg child: (10 kg + 5 kg) / 10 = 1.5 ml.
  • For a 20 kg child: (20 kg + 10 kg) / 10 = 3 ml.

However, the simplest formula is to multiply the child’s weight by 0.15.
